About the position

As Payload Systems Software Engineer, you will be responsible for developing the software that scientists use to operate their experiments on orbit in real time. This will involve a web interface that allows users to autonomously operate their payloads in space, and the backend systems that allow data to be routed from the user, through Tumbleweed's mission control software, to the spacecraft over radio link. Key challenges will include maintaining fault isolation, giving non-expert users the experience of a remote desktop in space, and developing strategies for autonomous management of the spacecraft's resources to prevent conflicts between payloads.

You will be closely collaborating with engineers responsible for developing spacecraft hardware as well as customer-facing payload scientists. You'll be involved throughout the entire development cycle, from initial research and design, through prototyping, AIT and operations support all the way to launching a spacecraft in early 2028.

Responsibilities

  • Developing frontend software for on-orbit operations of microgravity research and manufacturing payloads.
  • Developing elements of mission control software to enable seamless real-time operations in space.
  • Designing strategies for autonomous management of spacecraft resources.
  • Supporting Pod users with payload integration and operations in flight.

What we’re looking for

  • Being ambitious, kind and ready to learn.
  • Experience with software development in an embedded environment.
  • Working proactively and reliably in a dynamic environment.
  • Readiness to take ownership, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Bonus points for

  • Experience with web development.
  • Experience with spacecraft software and satellite autonomy.
  • Portfolio in DIY or volunteer projects related to space systems or software development.
